HKVCA Flagship Event
China Summit

In the last few years, we have seen a boom in the domestic private equity/venture capital industry in China, followed by a sharp decline in 2012, in terms of the amount of funds raised, investments and divestments. Is the downturn cyclical, or are we seeing structural changes in the industry? How do PE/VC firms position themselves amid the changes?

Closer to Hong Kong, Qianhai is being developed as an experimental zone to spearhead financial reform, particularly in cross-border capital flows. A set of provisional measures on the establishment of private equity investment enterprises involving foreign capital has been promulgated. How do practitioners in Hong Kong take advantage of the Qianhai opportunity?

22 March, 2013

The annual HKVCA Golf Day was a tremendous success with 62 avid golfers teeing off under brilliant blue skies. After completing their rounds the attendees were treated to a networking lunch, one of the highlights of which was a raffle and auction that added to the all-around levity of the day. We would like to express our thanks to our sponsors, namely our Gold Sponsors Ernst and Young, Lexington Partners, Milbank and UBS; our Breakfast Sponsor, SEAVI Advent Ocean Private Equity; and Aon, our Lunch Sponsor. We would also like to thank the Golf Committee and those who were part of the team that contributed to the success of this most popular event.

HKVCA well represented on new FSDC
In June 2012 incoming Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, C Y Leung, proposed the creation of a Financial Services Development Council (FSDC). The Council was confirmed by the city's financial secretary John Tsang in the 2013-14 Budget in late February and was identified as a "high-level, cross-sector advisory body, to offer views and suggestions to the Government on developing and promoting our financial services industry as well as reinforcing our position as an international financial centre".

Chaired by HSBC's non-executive deputy chairman Laura Cha, the FSDC has 21 members including Qin Xiao, former President of China International Trust and Investment Corporation, and Levin Zhu, son of former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and CEO of China International Capital Corporation.

In an announcement on 5 April, a further 34 non-official members and two ex-official members were appointed for a two-year term to serve five committees established under the FSDC: financial development research; Mainland opportunities; new business; market development; and human capital.

The HKVCA is pleased to report that our organisation is well-represented on these committees. Vice Chairman John Levack will sit on the new business committee with HKVCA Technical Committee member Florence Yip of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Also sitting on the new business committee are Mark McCombe, Asia Pacific Chairman of BlackRock Inc, and Christophe Lee, CFO of OrbusNeich and former chairman of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA Hong Kong).

Clifford Chance partner Mark Shipman, also a member of the HKVCA's Technical Committee, has been appointed to the FSDC's financial development research committee.
