The General Anti-Avoidance Rules ("GAAR") provisions grant powers to Indian income-tax authorities to invalidate any arrangement for tax purposes, if the main purpose or one of the main purposes, of entering into the arrangement by the taxpayer is to obtain a tax benefit. The provisions included in the Income-tax Act, 1961, are expected to be effective from April 1, 2013.

The law provides that GAAR provisions are to be applied  in accordance with the guidelines to be prescribed by the Central Board of Direct Taxes ("CBDT"). A committee set up by the CBDT has released recommendations around GAAR guidelines seeking public comments.

With a view to provide an overview of the draft guidelines as relevant to Asset Managers including Foreign Institutional , Venture Capital, Private Equity and Alternative Investors and the practical challenges arising out of such guidelines, we have arranged a Video Conference to discuss the guidelines and cordially invite you to participate in the same.
