   HKVCA Private Equity Advanced Course - Directorship
The HKVCA held its Advanced PE Course on Directorship for senior and mid-level private equity and venture capital professionals on April 16, 2019. The two hour course, which was held at KPMG’s offices, featured a number of expert instructors.

Alice Au, from Spencer Stuart, discussed how directors add value and what drives board performance. Alice was joined by Robert Petty, Co-Founder of Clearwater, and both shared some actual case examples of “best practices”. Alice offered a number of suggestions on the issue of board structure and composition, including a sample board skills matrix.

Alva Lee, a partner and Head of Internal Audit & Risk Compliance Services at KPMG, discussed PE investment and its impact on governance and directorships, as well as pre and post-deal financial controls due diligence.

More than 30 members of the HKVCA attended the course with many indicating they found it extremely valuable. The HKVCA extends a very special thanks to our great sponsors, KPMG, for providing both the venue and lunch for the attendees.

The Evolution of CSR, ESG and the SDGs in Private Equity
While it is true that ESG has been evolving rapidly in the asset management industry, sustainability development goals (SDGs) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) have swept across a broader landscape of institutions, shaping public policy, listing requirements and corporate strategy. This ESG luncheon event aims to provide a snapshot of these developments, with particular focus on what private equity investors need to be mindful of. The talk will open with a presentation by Steve Okun of EMPEA, which will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Jie Gong of Pantheon and comprised of thought leaders from sustainability, operational value creation, corporate governance and ESG measurement areas to provide integrated knowledge sharing on best practices.

How to be stress-proof in a stressful world
Stress is a normal part of life. It stems from worrying about work, finances, health, family and relationships. While a tolerable amount of stress can motivate us to reach our goals, being constantly stressed is not healthy and can even make us sick.

Technology has significantly increased our stress levels in recent years by exposing us to a constant flow of information. While external stressors are inevitable, we can change the way we react to it. Our brains can be rewired through neuroplasticity, combating stress by developing resilience. In this session, clinical psychiatrist Professor Lee Sing explains how stress shapes the brain and body, and how “feeling stressed” differs from the clinical level of “breakdown”. Professor Lee will also provide tips on how to:

•    think flexibly to “edit” the world;
•    nourish your brain with exercise;
•    take digital vacations and “waste” time with real people;
•    reclaim self-awareness and acceptance;
•    seek the latest and most effective treatment; and
•    learn what wellness means after recovering from a unique stressful experience.
