Rebecca Xu
Asia Alternatives Advisor Hong Kong

Rebecca Xu is a Co-Founder and Managing Director of Asia Alternatives. Ms. Xu splits her time between Asia Alternatives’ Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong offices. Ms. Xu is on the Firm’s Investment Committee and co-leads Asia Alternatives’ investments in growth and venture capital funds, focusing most of her time on Asia Alternatives’ China investments.

Prior to starting Asia Alternatives, Ms. Xu was a Senior Investment Officer at the Funds Group of the International Finance Corporation (“IFC”), the private sector investment arm of the World Bank Group. There, she had the primary responsibility of leading IFC’s fund investing and portfolio supervision in Asia for over six years. Previously, Ms. Xu also worked at McKinsey & Co, Inc. (Washington D.C.) and HSBC (Hong Kong).

Ms. Xu received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the Foreign Affairs College in Beijing, China. Ms. Xu is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English.

Ms. Xu currently serves on the Advisory Boards for a number of Asia Alternatives’ China and India private equity funds. In addition, she serves as the Chairwoman of the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (HKVCA) and on the Board of the Chun Hui Bo’ai Children’s Foundation. Ms. Xu is a member of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance.

Leon Meng
Ascendent Capital Partners (Asia)

Mr. Meng is the founding Managing Partner and Chairman of Ascendent Capital Partners, a private equity firm managing capital for global renowned institutional investors. Prior to Ascendent, Mr. Meng was a Managing Director of D. E. Shaw & Co., where he was a global partner and the leader of the firm’s Asian investment office.  He also founded and was CEO of its highly successful private equity business in Greater China. Previously, Mr. Meng was a Managing Director and Co-head of China at JPMorgan, in charge of its Asia M&A and China investment banking activities. Mr. Meng began his career in the mid 1990s as an M&A specialist and was a Vice President at Credit Suisse First Boston based in New York.

Mr. Meng earned his MPPM with distinctions from the Yale School of Management, where he is a Donaldson Fellow and a Global Advisory Board member.  He cofounded the nonprofit Yale University Emotional Intelligence China Fund and is a member of the Yale University Beijing Center Global Advisory Committee.  Mr. Meng is an advisory board member of the Harvard Kennedy School Mossavar-Rahmani Center and a founding council member of the Future Forum, a nonprofit organization promoting science and technology.  He is also a member of YPO Hong Kong Chapter.

Alain Fontaine
Beyond Traditions

Alain V Fontaine has been working in Asia in Private Equity investment (corporate and institutional) for most of the last 30 years, sourcing and executing investment transactions and managing investment portfolios.

Mr. Fontaine worked for CDP Capital – Communications (a private equity arm of the Quebec pension fund known as CDPQ) from 1998 to the end of 2003, when CDPQ decided to stop its activities in Asia. He and his team from Hong Kong, Korea and Japan made direct private equity investments in the region and managed CDP’s investments in regional and country funds. He also worked for On Capital, a China-focused Private Equity fund and for Investel Asia, a family office focused on the TMT sectors.

On the operations side, Mr. Fontaine, a Professional Engineer (telecom), worked for Bell Canada and its subsidiaries in Canada, Africa and Asia for the first 17 years of his career. He was also the founding President and COO of Bell Ardis in 1988 (a jv with Motorola) and the CEO of the Newcom Group in Mongolia in 2007 – 08.

In 2012, Mr Fontaine joined Beyond Traditions, the lead investor behind Ocean Equity Partners, a private equity fund manager that specializes in industrial, manufacturing, retail, TMT, and other sectors in Greater China.

Mr. Fontaine holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sherbrooke, Canada.

Jie Gong
Pantheon Ventures (HK)

Jie Gong is a Partner at Pantheon, and a member of the firm’s Asia Regional Investment Committee and the Global Co-investment Committee. Jie joined Pantheon from Morgan Stanley Alternative Investment Partners’ private equity fund of funds group, where she led Asian investment activity and was a member of the Global Investment Committee. Before that she was a Vice President at JPMorgan responsible for leverage finance deal origination, structuring and execution in Greater China. Previously she worked at the International Finance Corporation on emerging market debt and equity investments. Jie received a Masters in Finance from London Business School, an MA in Economics from University of Miami and a BA in Economics and International Trade from Shanghai International Studies University. Jie is Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (HKVCA) and serves on its board.  She founded and chairs HKVCA’s ESG committee, and co-chairs its LP committee. She is also a committee member of United Nation Principle of Responsible Investment Private Equity Advisory Committee (UNPRI PEAC).

Vincent Chan
The University of Hong Kong

Vincent Chan is a Director of Samena Capital,  a principal investment group, which invests across multiple asset classes including private equity and corporate credit within the Subcontinent, Asia, Middle East and North Africa (the SAMENA region). It has over US$309 million  of assets under management, committed by a unique shareholder and investor network consisting of prominent business families and entrepreneurs across the SAMENA region.

Vincent was the Founding CEO for 8 years of Spring Capital, an independent private equity firm that invests exclusively in China.  He has 31 years of Asia experience in private equity and has made over 45 investments in growth companies in China. Vincent was previously a Managing Director and an Investment Committee Member of JAFCO Asia, serving as the Co-head of the Asian private equity funds for 7 years. 

Prior to JAFCO Asia, Vincent was a private equity investor with Suez Asia and HSBC Private Equity (Asia) based in Hong Kong. Vincent commenced his professional career in Standard Chartered’s corporate finance division there.

Vincent received a B.A. from the University of Hong Kong and an MBA from the Manchester Business School, and also obtained a CFA charter.  He is currently the Co-President of the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (Chairman 2005/06), a member of the Main Board and GEM Listing Review Committees of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, a Board Member of the Hong Kong Foundation for the University of Manchester, a Member of the University of Hong Kong Investments Sub-Committee managing the endowment funds, a Senior Adviser (former Board Member) of the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education,  the IC Member of Corporate Venture Fund of HK Science and Technology Parks, a panel member of the Resolvability Review Tribunal and a panel member of the Securities and Futures Appeals Tribunal.  Vincent was a member of the Main Board and GEM Listing Committee of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (2007-12), a member of the Public Shareholders Group of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (2005-11), members of Innovation and Technology Advisory Committee (2006-10) and Information & Communication Technology Services Advisory Committee (2005-08) of the HK Trade Development Council, a Director of the Manchester Business School Leadership Board (2010-19) and a member of the Disciplinary Panel of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (2006-13). He received the award as the 2011 Outstanding Alumni of the University of Manchester.

In the China context, Vincent is a Member of Chengdu Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.  He was named a Top 10 Venture Capitalist in China by Zero2IPO in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006. He was also selected as one of the 10 “Most Influential Venture Capitalists in China” by Top Capital in 2005 and was ranked Number 9th as China Best Venture Capitalists by Forbes Magazine in December 2015.

Queenie Ho

Queenie Ho is a Partner and Head of Investor Relations at Affinity Equity Partners. Queenie joined Affinity in 2004. She is a Member of the Investment Committee, and Valuation and Portfolio Review Committee of Affinity.  She currently serves on the board of directors of Plaza Premium Group. Before joining Affinity, Queenie was a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. Queenie holds a BSc in Economics with first-class honours from the London School of Economics, a MPhil in Finance with distinction from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Wendy Zhu
AlpInvest Partners

Wendy is a Partner, Managing Director and Global Head of AlpInvest Partners’ Primary Fund Investments team. She is also responsible for the Secondary and Portfolio Finance team in the Asia Pacific region and a member of the Operating Committee. She joined AlpInvest Partners in 2007 from Macquarie Funds Management, where she was Senior Vice President of Asia-Pacific regional private equity fund investments and co-investments. Previously, Wendy was a Director with Deutsche Bank Asset Management and an Associate Director at MetLife. Wendy received a BS in Business Administration and an MS in Accounting from the University of Southern California. She represents AlpInvest Partners on various Advisory Boards.

Shirley Ma
APG Asset Management Asia

Shirley Ma is a Senior Portfolio Manager in the Private Equity team of APG Asset Management, based in Hong Kong. She leads APG’s Private Equity efforts in Asia Pacific.

Prior to joining APG, Shirley was a Director of Private Equity Asia at MetLife. She was a member of the Alternative Investments Unit investment committee and represented MetLife on a number of fund advisory boards. Before relocating to Hong Kong in 2014, Shirley spent seven years in London with MetLife where she focused on sourcing, selection, implementation and monitoring for private equity fund investments in Asia and Europe. Prior to MetLife, Shirley was an auditor in PricewaterhouseCoopers in London and Ernst & Young in Hong Kong. 

Shirley holds a master’s degree in International Banking from the University of Birmingham and a bachelor’s degree in Surveying from the University of Hong Kong. She is also a CFA charterholder.

Melissa Guzy
Arbor Ventures

Melissa C. Guzy serves as the Founder and Managing Partner at Arbor Ventures. Prior to establishing Arbor Ventures, Melissa held the role of Managing Partner and was a pivotal member of the Investment Committee at VantagePoint Capital Partners. Her current portfolio of board positions encompasses InCountry, Tabby, Ready, Nomi Health, and TrueAccord. Notably, Melissa played the role of investor board member for Paidy, a company that was subsequently acquired by Paypal for an impressive $2.88 billion. Beyond her corporate involvements, Melissa also holds a position on the Board of Trustees at The Jackson Laboratory, an institution committed to uncovering precise genomic solutions for diseases and fostering global collaboration within the biomedical community to enhance human health.

Melissa’s academic journey led her to Wellesley College, and she further advanced her education by obtaining a Master of Science in Finance from the University of Florida. Her scholarly contributions include the paper “Venture Capital Returns and Public Market Performance.” She holds a prominent role as the Co-Chair of the Venture Committee within the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (HKVCA), and she also serves on the Board of Directors of the HKVCA. Notably, she was previously a member of the Hong Kong SFC on Innovation. Melissa’s expertise extends to academia, where she served as a guest lecturer on Venture Capital Industry at prestigious institutions such as the University of Florida, Hong Kong University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Furthermore, Melissa is a distinguished Hopkins Fellow and an alumna of the Women’s Leadership Program at Harvard University. Her accomplishments have garnered recognition, including being listed as a Top 100 Influencer in Fintech by NxtBnk, earning the designation of an AlwaysOn Fintech Power Player, and being acknowledged as one of the Top 13 Women in Asia who are Tech Influencers.

Joseph Zeng
Arcadia Fund

Mr. Zeng is the Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Arcadia Fund Management Group, which manages a fund investing into equities and convertible bonds placed by companies listed or to be listed in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

Before founding Arcadia Fund at the end of 2022, Mr. Zeng was the head of Greenwoods Asset Management’s Hong Kong Office. Before joining Greenwoods HK in 2008, Mr. Zeng was a Vice President at JPMorgan’s investment banking department, focusing on the IPOs and mergers and acquisitions of financial institutions, including Chinese banks, insurers, and fund managers. Prior to moving to the investment banking department, Mr. Zeng was an equity analyst with JPMorgan’s equity research department, co-covering Chinese banks and securities firms.

Mr. Zeng graduated with a Master of Science degree in Accounting & Finance from the London School of Economics, where he received the Robert Fleming scholarship.

Also Mr. Zeng attended the Master of International Finance program of the Graduate School of the People’s Bank of China (GSPBC, now the PBC Graduate School of Tsinghua University), and holds a B.A. degree in International Finance from Wuhan University.

Mr. Zeng is a Vice Chairman of the China Committee of HKVCA (The Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association/香港创业及私募投资协会). He is also a director of the board of Tsinghua University’s Hong Kong Alumni Association. And he was the chairman of GSPBC’s alumni association in the North America and Hong Kong, respectively.

Edward Huang
Blackstone

Mr. Huang is Head of Private Equity for Greater China and Korea for Blackstone. Before joining Blackstone, Mr. Huang was previously a Managing Director for China investments in Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia, and also worked in investment banking for Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch in New York and Hong Kong. Mr. Huang received a B.A. from Yale University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Tony Zhang

Dr. Zhang has over 15 years’ experience as senior management in PE/VC funds and M&A business. Since 2016, as the Co-CIO in China Resources Capital, he has covered several sectors and different investment stages with accumulated AUM of 5 billion USD. He is also a member of the Innovation Committee and the Investment Consulting Committee of China Resources Group, where he takes an active role within the group.

Eric Mason
The Church Pension Fund

Eric Mason is a Managing Director of The Church Pension Fund. He joined the Church Pension Fund in 2009 as the head of the Fund’s new Asian office based in Hong Kong and has been based in Asia for almost 25 years. Mr. Mason and his team are responsible for the Fund’s investments in Asia across all asset classes with a focus on private equity, venture capital, hedge funds, credit and real estate. The team manages approximately $3.0 billion in investments in Asian based managers.

Prior to joining the Fund, Mr. Mason was the head for the Carlyle Group’s Asia Leverage Finance Fund and before that spent 13 years at JPMorgan most recently as Asian regional head of Leveraged Finance. In these roles, Mr. Mason has developed experience in structuring, underwriting and investing in private equity and credit transactions. Mr. Mason first came to Asia in 1990 to teach at the Foreign Affairs University in Beijing with Princeton-in-Asia, prior to that he worked in Washington DC for U.S. Senator Bill Bradley. Mr. Mason earned a Masters Degree in International Affairs from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and a B.A. in International Relations and Economics from the University of Delaware. Mr. Mason speaks Mandarin Chinese.

The Church Pension Fund is a private tax exempt organization based in New York City with more than US$17 billion in assets under management. The Fund has been in continuous operation since 1917 and provides pension benefits to those serving the Episcopal Church. The Church is an extensive investor in alternative assets and has been investing with many of the global leaders in venture capital and private equity for decades.

Mr. Alvin Lam is an operating partner with CVC Capital Partners. Alvin joined CVC in 2005. Johnny Chan
Cyberport

Mr Johnny Chan is the Chief Investment Officer of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited. He leads the investment strategies and all aspect of the Cyberport Macro Fund’s developments. He was a member of the Cyberport Advisory Panel until September 2018.

Mr. Chan is a Deputy Chairman of the Listing Committee of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and the President of the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Capital Association (aka HKVCA). He is the Secretary General of the Asia Venture Capital and Private Equity Council (AVCPEC) which he co-founded with 9 other Asian associations in 2011. He was the Chairman of HKVCA from 2007-2011.

He is the founder of Softech Investment Management Limited, which acted as the manager of the Government’s Applied Research Fund from 2000-2019.  He acts as an Independent Non Executive Director for several companies and the Make a Difference Institute. He was the co-Founder of Techpacific and Crosby Group  and acted as the CEO of Crosby Capital Limited from 2000 to 2013 and concurrently, Chairman and CIO of Crosby Asset Management (Hong Kong) Limited until 2016. The Crosby Group activities comprise of management of venture and private equity funds, financial advisory and wealth management.

Mr Chan obtained a BA Hons Economics from the London Metropolitan University and an MBA from Bayes Business School, City, University of London. He is a fellow of FINSIA and holds a Post Graduate Diploma of the Securities Institute of Australia.

Stephanie Hui
Goldman Sachs

Stephanie is head of Private and Growth Equity in Asia Pacific, co-head of Asia Pacific Private Investing and global co-head and co-chief investment officer of Growth Equity within Goldman Sachs Asset Management.

Stephanie initially joined Goldman Sachs in 1995 as an analyst. She worked in the Principal Investment Area in New York and then transferred to Hong Kong in 1997. Stephanie left Goldman Sachs in 1998 to attend graduate school, rejoined the firm as an associate in 2000 and became an executive director in 2003. She was named managing director in 2006 and partner in 2010.

Stephanie is a member of the Board of Trustees of Asia Society, the Board of Governors of the China Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, the Board of Directors of Save the Children Hong Kong and Honorary Trustees of The Women’s Foundation.

Stephanie earned an AB in Biology, summa cum laude, from Harvard College in 1995 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2000.

Happiness Capital

Eric setup Happiness Capital, the global venture capital arm of the Lee Kum Kee Group with the mission to make the world a happier place. Happiness Capital is a Certified B Corp. He is also a member of the Policy Research Committee of the Financial Services Development Council HK. Prior to joining the Lee Kum Kee Group, Eric co-founded AGENDA which was acquired by WPP where he stayed as the Chief Client Officer (Asia Pacific) of WPP Wunderman. Eric’s first venture was an AI healthcare startup in the US. He was also Director Consultant of e-Business at Cap Gemini US. Eric was an AI research scientist and university lecturer in the UK in early 90s.

H. Chin Chou
Morgan Stanley Asia

H. Chin Chou is the Chief Executive Officer of Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia and a Managing Director of Morgan Stanley, based in Hong Kong.  Mr. Chou also serves on the Firm’s Asia Pacific Executive Committee, which is comprised of the Firm’s senior business leaders within the Asia Pacific region.

Mr. Chou joined Morgan Stanley in 1987 in New York and has spent 34 years at Morgan Stanley, with the past 30 years in Asia.  Mr. Chou has led MSPE Asia’s five private equity funds to date: the $330mm MSGEM Fund (1999), the $525mm Asia Fund II (2005), the $1.5bn Asia Fund III (2007), the $1.7bn Asia Fund IV (2013), and Asia Fund V, currently investing.  Mr. Chou also oversees the Firm’s China RMB Fund private equity business as well as the Firm’s Thailand Fund private equity business.  Mr. Chou was also part of Morgan Stanley’s Private Equity Group in New York in the late 1980s.  

He was previously a Director of CTCI, eAccess, ECVision, HTL, Hyundai Rotem, ITest, Landmark, Ssangyong Corporation and YesAsia.  Mr. Chou holds a B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. with Distinction from Harvard Business School.

Kent Chen
Neuberger Berman Asia

Kent Chen, CFA, is a Managing Director and head of Asia private equity at Neuberger Berman. Mr. Chen joined Neuberger Berman in 2015 from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) after 17 years of central banking career in various positions including Deputy Chief Representative of the HKMA’s New York Office and Advisor to the Executive Director for China at the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C. From 2008, Mr. Chen helped to establish the HKMA’s private equity program. Before joining the HKMA in 1998, Mr. Chen was Head of China Research at Daiwa Securities.

Gabriel Li
Orchid Asia Group Management

Gabriel Li is the Managing Partner & Investment Committee Member of Orchid Asia Group Management Limited, a private equity firm focused on investing in Asia specifically China over the past 20+ years.  He led the first round investment in Ctrip International (Nasdaq: CTRP) and Eachnet (sold to EBAY) for Orchid Asia.  He is also currently the Vice Chairman of the Board and Director of Ctrip, the largest travel reservation services company in China.  Gabriel is an ex-director of Autohome Inc. (Nasdaq: ATHM), Lifetech Scientific Corporation (HKSE: 8122), Zhaopin (Nasdaq: ZPIN), and Sangfor Technologies Inc.(SHE: 300454). Gabriel is currently the Director of Nirvana Asia Ltd, Qeeka Home (Cayman) Inc.

Gabriel graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Berkeley, earned his M.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his M.B.A. from Stanford Business School.

John Kim

John is Managing Director and Head of Asia-Pacific, Private Equity at PSP Investments. John heads PSP’s Asian PE business and Hong Kong operations, where he joined in 2019 as the first employee of the Hong Kong office. Prior to PSP, John spent a decade at AlpInvest where he focused on PE co-investments in Asia. He started his career at Lehman Brothers. John holds a Sc.B. in Applied Math-Economics from Brown University.

Conrad Tsang

Mr Tsang has been in the private equity and venture capital industry for over 20 years. Mr Tsang is currently President and Director of the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (HKVCA). Previously, he was Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association’s Chairman of the Board (2013-2015). He was voted one of “The 50 Best Venture Capitalists in China” by Forbes China Magazine (2008, 2009). Mr Tsang is a Member of Oxford Investment Opportunity Network (OION), Member of Imperial College Investor Network, and Member of Hong Kong Cyberport Investor Network (CIN). He was also invited to serve as Asia Senior Advisor of Apollo Education Group/Apollo Global, a global higher-education company.

Mr Tsang obtained a Master’s Degree in Management Studies at University of Oxford, United Kingdom; and a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (First Class Honors) at Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, United Kingdom. He also completed an executive program on Private Equity and Venture Capital at Harvard Business School, US.

Bonnie Lo
TPG NewQuest

Bonnie is a founding partner and COO of TPG NewQuest. Bonnie oversees the finance, investor relations, operations and administrative functions of TPG NewQuest.

Bonnie has over 20 years’ experience in finance and investing. Prior to taking on the COO role, Bonnie was co-head of China business for TPG NewQuest. Prior to founding TPG NewQuest, Bonnie was a Director in Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s (BAML) Asia Private Equity group focusing on investments in Greater China. Bonnie has also held other positions within BAML including in the Corporate Principal Investments and Investment Banking groups. She also previously worked at 3i Group plc focusing on growth capital investments in Greater China.

Bonnie has an Executive MBA from EMBA-Global Asia, a joint program between Columbia Business School, University of Hong Kong Business School and London Business School. She received her undergraduate degree in Economics and East Asian Studies, magna cum laude, from Brown University in Providence, RI.

Bonnie is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Tommy Yip
Unicorn Capital Partners

Tommy Yip is the Founding Partner of Unicorn Capital Partners, a tech-focused venture capital platform specialized in primary fund investments, secondaries, and direct investments in China. Prior to founding Unicorn, Tommy spend a decade as Partner & Head of North Asia for Emerald Hill Capital Partners, an emerging manager focused fund-of-funds in Asia. Before that, Tommy was Head of Research at the AVCJ Group.

Danny Lee
VCA Capital Limited

Danny Lee is an experienced investor with over 25 years of global private equity experience spanning venture, growth and buyouts. He is currently managing VCA Capital Fund I, helping individuals and family offices manage their private equity portfolio globally through both fund and direct investments. Danny is also a senior advisor to Blue Pool Capital where he was a partner running global private equity since 2015. Before that he was a managing director at Bain Capital and Vice President at Investor AB, the largest industrial holding company in the Nordic region. He started his career with Lehman Brothers in NY. Danny has a BA in Economics from Columbia and is a CFA Charter holder.

Danny is an Aspen Finance Fellow and Edmund Hillary Fellow. He sits on the investment committee for New Zealand Elevate Venture Fund, on the board of the HK Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, and is the chairman of Seed Foundation, a youth education NGO sponsored by Alibaba Entrepreneur Fund. He is also a committee member at the Financial Services Development Council, an advisor to the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Our Hong Kong Foundation, and a founding Patron to the HK Palace Museum.
