The HKVCA’s Private Equity Fundamentals Course returns in full in 2023, with seven newly updated modules that have been purposefully designed to provide participants with deep knowledge and the ability to examine and analyze private equity and venture capital. The course is highly relevant for new professionals just entering the industry and for those who may have wide experience but are seeking to update their skills. It is also vital for those who may have attended the course in previous years but require a refresher due to a host of recent changes to regulations and an investment environment that remains in flux.
Delivered by the industry’s foremost experts, the modules cover the entire investment process, from fund-raising strategy and distribution of returns to buyouts and exits, dealing with such issues as fund strategies, tax, cross-border transactions, legal and regulatory structures, marketing, deal making, and management of portfolio companies.

Experienced industry professionals looking to refresh their skills
Successful PE and VC professionals are adept at managing the shifting business environment between GPs and LPs, as well as GPs and their investees. At the same time, regulations and the investment environment are constantly changing. As a result, the HKVCA regularly updates the Course’s curriculum and contents, providing industry professionals with the most efficient way to equip themselves with the latest industry tools to address specific challenges and a deeper understanding of investment opportunities in the industry.
New entrants to the profession
The Private Equity Fundamentals Course features seven structured modules that have been specially designed to provide participants comprehensive information as well as thorough analysis of the private equity and venture capital industry. The program provides opportunities for candidates to deepen their understanding of the private investment market and help them acquire relevant fundraising and exit knowledge in a complex market.

Mr Chia brings 40+ years of diverse international experience as family office C-suite executive, venture capitalist, entrepreneur and corporate executive in the technology and consumer sector across Asia, Europe and U.S.

Gordon Yen,
Founding Managing Partner, Radiant Tech Ventures Limited
Gordon is the Founding Managing Partner and licensed Responsible Officer (CE No. ABF837) of Radiant under the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Ordinance (SFO) for Type 9 (asset management) regulated activity with over 25 years of operational and board level experience in private and listed companies involving cross-border investments, global supply chain, offshore manufacturing and infrastructure businesses. He has been involved in innovation and technology venture investments since the late 1990s through managing corporate and venture capital fund investments as well as investments as angel investor in transactions involving startups from Israel, Greater China and North America. He is currently the Non-executive Vice Chairman and Non-executive Director of Fountain Set (Holdings) Limited (SEHK: 0420), an Independent Non-executive Director and Chairman of Sustainability Committee of Impro Precision Industries Limited (HKEX:1286), an Independent Non-executive Director of Asia Allied Infrastructure Holdings Limited (HKEX:711), the Chairman of the Hong Kong Business Angel Network and has previously served as Independent Non-Executive Director of Hopewell Holdings Limited and Hopewell Highway Infrastructure Limited as well as Director of GS1 Kong Kong. Philip Hu,

Philip is a founding member of Primavera Capital and sits on the Leadership Committee, the Strategic Partnerships Committee, the Portfolio Management Committee, the Operations Committee, among others. Prior to Primavera, Philip worked in investment banking based in Hong Kong and a hedge fund based in San Francisco. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University.

Renee Song,

Renee is an Executive Director at Primavera Capital with responsibilities across fundraising, portfolio management, operations, and ESG.
While at Primavera, Renee has been an investment professional with deal experience on cross border transactions across multiple sectors. Renee was also previously with a global management consulting firm having worked across APAC with clients that include the largest and leading financial institutions and PE sponsors in the region.
Renee has a Master of Law (LLM) with distinction and a Bachelor of Economics and Finance, with honors and a minor in French, from the University of Hong Kong.

Kenny Chen,

Kenny is a Senior Vice President in CDIB Capital’s Hong Kong office. Prior to joining CDIB Capital, Kenny was an Associate in the Investment Banking Division of Barclays, where he focused on the origination and execution of Leveraged Finance and Loan Capital Markets transactions in the Asia-Pacific region. Prior to Barclays, Kenny was a Senior Consultant at Deloitte & Touche’s Capital Markets Structured Products team based in New York. During his MBA program, Kenny also worked as a Summer Associate in the Financial Sponsors and Leveraged Finance group at UBS Investment Bank in New York.
Kenny holds an MBA from Yale School of Management and a BS with dual concentrations in Accounting and Finance from Boston College, and is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of New York.

Maureen Ho,
Partner, Hong Kong, Morrison Foerster
Maureen’s practice focuses on advising private equity and real estate funds, and financial and corporate investors in all aspects of their investment cycle, including private and public mergers and acquisitions, leveraged buy-outs, infrastructure investments, joint ventures, as well as pre-IPO investments, bolt-on acquisitions and corporate restructurings. Maureen also has experience advising clients in corporate carve-outs, management buy-outs and general corporate matters. She has been recently named ‘Rising Star’ in Private Equity category in Asia-Pacific region by International Financial Law Review (IFLR), and has also been listed as one of the ‘Hong Kong Raising Stars’ by Asian Legal Business 2023.
Prior to joining Morrison Foerster, Maureen worked in a leading international law firm’s Hong Kong and London offices, during which she was a secondee at The Carlyle Group for seven months advising its Asia team in their investments and disposals.

Julia Lee,

Julia Lee is an associate in Morrison Foerster’s Hong Kong Office. Her practice spans across cross-border M&A, joint ventures, private equity, venture capital financings as well as corporate restructurings.

Yilong Luo,

Yilong’s practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, as well as other general corporate matters.
Yilong received a J.D. cum laude from Cornell Law School in 2017, where he was a notes editor of the Cornell Law Review.

Yvonne Dunn,

Yvonne Dunn is an Executive Director of Ernst & Young with over 15 years of valuation and investment advisory experience in China and Hong Kong. Yvonne specializes in business valuation and has undertaken a number of business and intangible asset valuation engagements for M&A transactions, restructuring and financial reporting purposes. Yvonne has prior experience in sell-side and buy-side investment advisory firms and has also been extensively engaged in portfolio valuation for private equity and venture capital clients. She has also participated as speakers in workshops for several
institutions including State Taxation Bureau of Guangdong Province, Hong Kong Financial Services Institute, RICS etc

Patrick Yip,
Vice Chair, Deloitte China
Patrick Yip, an experienced international tax partner, is Vice Chair of Deloitte China. He specializes in US International taxation, China-Hong Kong cross-border taxation and structuring M&A transactions. His clients include some of the largest private equity funds, sovereign funds and multinational companies in China and the US. He also advises high-net worth individuals on multijurisdictional trust and estate planning. In addition, he is a specialist in FATCA and CRS.
Patrick previously worked in San Francisco (in another Big 4 firm’s International Tax Group) and at Deloitte US’ Washington National Tax Office (International). He regularly speaks at seminars and conferences and is widely published and frequently interviewed by the press. He has been involved in tax policy discussions with both the Hong Kong and Chinese tax authorities. He is fluent in English and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin).
He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with an MPA Degree in Taxation (Highest Honors) and a BBA Degree in Accounting (High Honors). He completed the Senior Executive Program for China at Harvard Business School. He also has an MBA degree (Hons) from the University of Chicago and a law degree (Hons) from the University of Cambridge.
He is a member of the AICPA and HKICPA. He won an award in the State of Texas for his CPA exam results. He was named by International Tax Review as a Leading Individual in Tax.

Roy Phan,
Partner, International Tax Services, Deloitte China
Roy is a tax partner based in Hong Kong. He has more than 17 years of experience providing Hong Kong, China and international tax consulting, as well as Hong Kong tax compliance services for financial services clients (including banking and securities groups, insurance companies, investment funds and asset managers) and MNC clients.
He is specialized in advising offshore private equity funds, hedge funds and family offices on their Hong Kong and China tax issues at fund formation, in particular the applicability of the fund exemption regime in Hong Kong and the potential issue in China on indirect transfer in equity. He is also experienced in providing advice on the tax efficient investment holding structures from profit repatriation and future exit perspectives. Roy has resolved disputes with the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department on field audit & investigation cases involving fund managers in Hong Kong.
From an international tax perspective, Roy has also led various regional tax projects on group restructuring, cross-broader transactions, merger and acquisition deals for PE funds, banks and insurance companies, which involves diverse jurisdictions such as Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, etc.
Roy is a fellow member of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He has a BBA degree granted by Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Sandy Fung,
Partner, KPMG
Sandy is a tax partner in KPMG’s Asset Management group. She has more than 20 years of experience in performing tax structuring and advisory services to alternative investment funds including hedge funds, credit funds, special situation funds, real estate and infrastructure funds, private equity funds, venture capital funds etc. She also has extensive experiences in performing tax due diligence reviews and investment structuring in connection with M&A transactions.
Sandy was an in-house tax advisor for several global Private Equity Funds. She has substantial experiences in implementing the proposed investment, ownership, financing structures and performing restructuring. She has also been focused on advising the potential tax issues that may arise from the Asset Management and the Exit stages.
Sandy provides tax advisory services on investment structures in the Asia Pacific region and cross-border transactions. She advises on all aspects of investment structures, including substance requirements, ownership and holding structures, financing arrangements, debt push down strategies and divestment scenarios. Many of the assignments involve the effective use of double tax treaty and consideration of the potential direct, indirect, withholding taxes, capital and stamp duties etc.
Sandy has extensive experiences in dealing with Hong Kong tax audit cases in fund industries. Sandy is a Bachelor of the Professional Accountancy in The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Bachelor of Law in The University of London. Johnson is a Director in the Hong Kong Corporate Tax practice. Johnson has 20 years of Hong Kong and Malaysian corporate tax experience.
Professional and Industry Experience
- Johnson is in the Hong Kong corporate tax department, specializing in Financial Services.
- Johnson has a portfolio of clients in different industries including funds, financial services, trading, manufacturing, etc. His experience includes the preparation of corporate tax returns, responding to tax queries, advising on transactions, etc.
- Johnson is a member of the Hong Kong GCMS team and has experience is coordinating regional tax compliance projects.
- Johnson has also involved in regional compliance, mergers & acquisition and restructuring engagements

Brian Lee,

Brian Lee is the general counsel of FountainVest Partners, a leading China focused private equity firm.
FountainVest’s investments are long-term oriented and target high-growth industry leaders both in China and in businesses having a strong China nexus. Its core focus is to invest in the Consumer, Media & Technology, Healthcare, Industrials and Financial Services sectors. FountainVest works closely with management teams to create value in the areas of strategy, operations, human resource management, finance, industry consolidation and governance.
Prior to joining FountainVest, Brian was working in the Hong Kong office of a well-known offshore law firm. His legal experience includes (i) corporate finance and corporate restructuring matters such as fundraising transactions for venture and private equity investments, mezzanine and pre-IPO financing, IPOs on global stock exchanges such as Hong Kong, Nasdaq, NYSE, China A-share, Singapore and London, note and bond issuances of listed and unlisted entities, mergers and acquisitions, takeovers and privatisations, backdoor listings and company reorganisations; and (ii) fund-related matters such as the structuring and establishment of offshore private equity and venture investment funds. Wayne Bannon,
Managing Director and General Counsel, Asia, The Carlyle Group
Wayne Bannon is General Counsel for The Carlyle Group in Asia. The Carlyle Group opened its first office in Asia in 1998 and has nine offices across seven countries with dedicated investment teams operating across buyout, growth capital, leveraged loans, and energy sectors. Carlyle has invested over US$18bn across Asia since 1998. Wayne joined Carlyle in 2007 having previously worked for a number of years in Tokyo as regional counsel for the Securitized Products Group and the Leveraged Finance Group of a US Investment Bank and prior to that position Mr. Bannon worked in the London, Tokyo and Hong Kong offices of the international law firm Allen & Overy LLP.

Jamie He,

Jamie He is a Director in the Global Legal Investment department. Jamie joined Carlyle in January 2020 and is based in Hong Kong.
Jamie’s practice focuses on international corporate mergers & acquisitions, and she provides dedicated assistance to private equity investment teams in Asia, across all sectors.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Jamie was the Legal Counsel for Permira, covering private equity investments in Asia across a wide range of sectors. Before that, Jamie was an associate in the corporate team at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Hong Kong. Jamie received her law degree from National University of Singapore. Jamie is admitted as a Solicitor of the High Court of Hong Kong, and as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore.
Jamie was named in Asian Legal Business (ALB)’s “Asia 40 Under 40” list in 2022, and her team was awarded “Financial Services In-House Team of the Year” at the ALB Hong Kong Law Awards 2022. Jamie was also shortlisted as “ALB Woman In-house Lawyer of the Year” in 2022 and 2021.

Queenie Ho,

Queenie Ho is a Partner and Head of Investor Relations at Affinity Equity Partners. Queenie joined Affinity in 2004. She is a Member of the Investment Committee, and Valuation and Portfolio Review Committee of Affinity. She currently serves on the board of directors of Trimco International. Before joining Affinity, Queenie was a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. Queenie holds a BSc in Economics with first-class honours from the London School of Economics, a MPhil in Finance with distinction from the University of Cambridge and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Rebekah Earp,

Rebekah joined CVC in June 2022 and is part of the Asia Operations team, which is involved throughout the ownership of portfolio companies to drive value creation and continued improvement. Prior to CVC she has spent the last 15 years in the region leading ESG integration in both public and private companies. She specializes in building ESG teams, expertise, governance, strategies and initiatives, as well as advising boards and C-suites on ESG matters.

Min Lin,
Founding Partner, TPG NewQuest
Min Lin is a Partner of TPG NewQuest. Min co-founded NewQuest and co-leads its Greater China business. Min has over 20 years of experience in finance and investing in the United States and Asia. Prior to co-founding NewQuest, she was a Director focusing on China investments for Bank of America’s Asia Private Equity Group based in Hong Kong.
Prior to relocating to Hong Kong, Min worked for several years at Merrill Lynch in New York within the structured finance group. She has also previously worked as an accountant for Arthur Andersen in China.
Min received her MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, MA and an undergraduate degree from Lingnan College of Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China. Min studied in the EMBA program of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business in Beijing. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Min is a member of the HKVCA’s PRC committee and serves on the Board of Trustees of Lingnan College of Sun Yat-Sen University. Min is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Apart from serving as regional leader, Lorna Chen is also a member of the firm’s Executive Group. Lorna founded and leads our asset management and investment funds practice in Asia. Lorna has 25 years of experience across the United States, Europe and Asia in the corporate law area, including 20 years in the investment funds and private equity field. She advises clients in the structuring, restructuring, formation and operation of alternative investment products, including private equity funds, venture capital funds, hedge funds, real estate funds, funds of funds, project funds and co-investment structures.
Lorna has extensive experience in cross-border transactions representing top global institutional clients such as the world’s major sovereign wealth funds, wealth management platforms, commercial and policy banks, insurance companies, as well as family offices and start-up companies.
Lorna is a frequent speaker at major regional conferences and is regularly interviewed by the financial media in Asia. She has also been consistently rated a leading lawyer by various independent ranking publications.

Wendy Zhu,
Partner, Managing Director & Global Head of Primary Fund Investments, AlpInvest Partners
Wendy is a Partner, Managing Director and Global Head of AlpInvest Partners’ Primary Fund Investments team. She is also responsible for the Secondary and Portfolio Finance team in the Asia Pacific region and a member of the Operating Committee.
She joined AlpInvest Partners in 2007 from Macquarie Funds Management, where she was Senior Vice President of Asia-Pacific regional private equity fund investments and co-investments. Previously, Wendy was a Director with Deutsche Bank Asset Management and an Associate Director at MetLife.
Wendy received a BS in Business Administration and an MS in Accounting from the University of Southern California. She represents AlpInvest Partners on various Advisory Boards.

Josh Jacob,

Josh Jacob is a Managing Director at Constellar Capital responsible for fundraising, sourcing, diligence and client relationships. Josh has over 18 years of global private market experience at various including Hamilton Lane, New Amsterdam Group and Centrum Capital.

Haide Lui,
Head of Investor Relations, Ascendent Capital Partners
Ms. Lui is Head of Investor Relations of Ascendent Capital Partners. Ms. Lui is responsible for IR and fundraising.
Prior to Ascendent, Ms. Lui spent over 10 years at HarbourVest Partners, focused on private equity fund investments across Asia. During that time, she served on the limited partner advisory committees of a number of pan-regional and China-focused private equity partnerships. Before that, Ms. Lui was with Morgan Stanley in the Global Capital Markets group in Hong Kong, focused on the origination and execution of equity financings, advising Asian and Chinese companies.

Charlotte is the Head of Allen & Overy’s Hong Kong Regulatory practice. She acts for a wide range of national and international financial institutions including investment and private banks, asset and wealth managers (including hedge fund and private equity managers and advisors) and insurance companies. Charlotte’s practice includes advising on setting up regulated businesses in Hong Kong, on-going compliance with regulatory laws, codes and guidelines and the impact of regulatory change. Some selected areas of expertise include licensing, product offering, regional and global cross border issues, regulatory corporate governance, ESG, anti-money laundering and data privacy. She has been actively involved in responding to regulatory consultations; recent examples include client suitability requirements, manager in charge regimes, amendments to the SFC Fund Manager Code of Conduct and SFC enforcement-related provisions and other regulatory changes. She is qualified as a solicitor both in Hong Kong and England & Wales. Charlotte is a member of the AIMA Regulatory Committee and HKVCA Regulatory Working Group. Charlotte has been ranked by the leading legal directories for many years. Winnie Peng,
Director, Roger King Center for Asian Family Business and Family Office, HKUST; Adjunct Associate Professor, Finance, HKUST
Professor Winnie Qian Peng is Director of Roger King Center for Asian Family Business and Family Office, Director of Thompson Center for Business Case Studies, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Finance at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She is also Board Member of International Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA, the largest membership association of family business scholars in the world), Founding Committee Member of the Case Center of Association of Asia-Pacific Business Schools, and Instructor for PEVC training program of the Hong Kong Venture Capital Association. Her research and teaching interests include family business, family office, family wealth management, family philanthropy, entrepreneurship, private equity and venture capital, etc.
Professor Peng’s research articles have been published in academic journals as well as international and local media. She is currently a columnist at Hong Kong Economic Times and China Family Business Review. She has written many case studies on Asian family businesses and family offices, some of which are distributed through Harvard Business Publishing. Professor Peng offers family business and family office courses at executive training program, master and UG levels in HKUST. She has been invited to teach family business and family office related topics for family business owners, ultra-high-net-wealth individuals and senior executives in China and around the world. She is a frequent speaker at local and international conferences. Professor Peng received her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Tsinghua University, and her PhD degree in Finance from HKUST. She is also a graduate of Harvard Business School Executive Education program “Private Equity and Venture Capital”

Alvin Lam,

Mr. Alvin Lam is an operating partner with CVC Capital Partners. Alvin joined CVC in 2005. Prior to joining CVC, Alvin was a Principal with the Boston Consulting Group’s Greater China practice and worked for Philip Morris International in a regional business development role. Alvin holds a BSc Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MBA from the Wharton School and an MA in International Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. |

NiQ Lai,

NiQ joined HKBN in 2004 and has rich experience in the telecommunications, research and finance industries. NiQ was appointed as Chief Financial Officer in 2006, Chief Talent & Financial Officer in 2016 and Group Chief Operating Officer in 2017. He took the helm as Group Chief Executive Officer in September 2018, leading HKBN to deliver world-class products and services to “Make our Home a Better Place to Live”. NiQ is passionate about developing HKBN Talents because he believes if you get the people right, the company will do great. Prior to joining HKBN, NiQ was an analyst and the Director and Head of Asia Telecom Research for Credit Suisse, where he was involved in numerous global fund-raising initiatives for Asian telecom carriers. In his youth, NiQ aspired to be a professional tennis player but a lack of sporting talent diverted him to become a CPA instead.
NiQ holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Western Australia, and an executive master of business administration degree from Kellogg-HKUST, Hong Kong. In March 2016, he was recognised as Best CFO (Hong Kong) by FinanceAsia Survey of Asia’s Best Companies 2016. He was appointed as a Lifetime Honorable Advisor of Chief Happiness Officer Association on 21 February 2022. NiQ is a Proud Co-Owner of HKBN.
